Update on the European School Milk Scheme
On 11th April, the European Council of Ministers approved the proposal to merge the European School Milk Scheme with the European Fruit and Vegetables Scheme. The UK abstained from the vote, whilst the Netherlands and Hungary voted against it. Defra told the Alliance that it supports the scheme and will consult with stakeholders on its implementation strategy over the summer, but that it abstained as it disagreed with a high level issue on the legal basis of the scheme. Defra will now begin drawing up the strategy to be implemented from August 2017, which the Alliance will feed into. The Alliance will also liaise with the European Commission, which will draw up the rules for certain aspects of the scheme, such as the procedural elements for member states to develop an implementation strategy.
