Update on the School Food Standards
Following the launch of the School Food Plan Alliance, we have now organised a meeting with one of the Chairs of the Alliance, Linda Creegan of the Children’s Food Trust.

The National Governor’s Association has agreed to host the briefing we produced on the role of school governors in implementing the School Food Standards; they are also considering a request to include an article from Dr Hilary in the autumn edition of their magazine for members.

We are also in the process of setting up meetings with Valentine Mulholland, Policy Adviser to the National Association of Headteachers, and Jackie O’Neil of the Department for Education Healthy Pupils Unit, to discuss the implementation of the school food standards.

Following the Queen’s Speech on 18th May, we will be looking for opportunities to use the Education for All Bill to raise the profile of the School Food Standards once it is published in the autumn. We will draft amendments to the Bill, for example requiring a report to Parliament each year evaluating the impact of the school food standards by region/take up. While it is unlikely that such an amendment would ultimately be passed into law, it will offer a good opportunity to discuss the role of school milk in Parliament, and the role of the School Food Standards specifically.
