Nursery Milk and School Food Standards

  • We have submitted a response to the Scottish Government’s consultation on its obesity strategy, highlighting the important contribution school and nursery milk makes to a healthy diet for children and tackling childhood obesity. We asked for measures to be implemented to encourage milk consumption in children in light of a reduction in the exemption in the sugar tax given to milk-based drinks.

  • We have submitted a response to HMRC’s consultation on Universal Credit in relation to Free School Meals. The proposals will result in up to 50,000 more being children eligible for free school meals (and hence milk), as well as protecting those who would have lost their eligibility. In our response we voice our support for the proposals in so far as they extend free milk to more children, and we highlighted the health and social benefits of school milk.

  • The Department of Health and Social Care published an updated Single Departmental Plan in light of its broadened scope to include Social Care. The Department again reaffirms its commitment to nursery milk.
