European School Milk Scheme

  • We have briefed Welsh Assembly Members who are engaged in the Health, Social Care and Sport, the Climate Change, Environment and Rural Affairs, and the Children, Young People and Education Committees, asking for them to support our campaign in the Welsh Assembly. We received responses from Labour’s Mike Hedges and Julie Morgan.

  • Our campaign was subsequently reported in the Welsh Daily Post along with Plaid Cymru’s Spokesperson for Rural Affairs, Simon Thomas, calling on the Welsh Government to support a domestic replacement to the EU School Milk Scheme. A Welsh Government spokesperson said that it would “explore options for the future of the scheme.” BBC Wales have also contacted us about a potential story on the campaign.

  • Plaid Cymru’s Dai Lloyd, tabled a written question about the Welsh Government’s plans to replace the EU School Milk Scheme. Kirsty Williams, Welsh Assembly Member for Brecon and Radnorshire and Cabinet Secretary for Education, responded to the question explaining that the Welsh Government would “explore options for the future of the scheme as part of our wider consideration around departure from the EU.”

  • We have continued to update our summary of all the member states’ strategies to the EU School Milk Scheme as more strategies have been published. We are paying particular attention to the complementary educational measures for ideas on how to promote milk consumption in children in the UK.
